Ciao Gio,
non l'ho provato con un firewall.
Ma se apri la porta 4664, o fai un NAT, dovrebbe passare.
Ciao

...A collegue comes to me and ask me if it was possible to make Google Desktop Dearch remotely to our server.
So I start thinking that logically it is possible. But how can I do that?
Let me searchthe web a bit...
shortly after I found a great site that have created a plug-in for having a remote access to the Google desktop search on an other machine.
Typically I installed on the server.
The plu-in works great.
It has a set of adminitration tools.
It is possible to restrict searches or only have the user make .doc or else file search...
You can also define the clients you accept via IP, range of IPs, host name... pretty cool!
So I installed it and made a test as a simple user!
SURPRISE!!!
It worked... even too well!
A user could get results over anything and the response would not tae in consideration the user rights!
Of course.. one thing this tool does not do is to answer to queries only dependently from the rights on the server.
In other words, the root or administrator user was used.
Or the user you logged on as....
So I sent them a mail to ask about it. I wanted to pay for it but I needed to know if there was a way to not give access to restricted forders when a user make the query.
I am afraid I never got the answer!!
So, I have to say that presales support is really poor quality!
So, having said that, here is my overall:
Usability: *****
Easy: *****
Secure: ****
Customer Service: -***** (it means negative 5)
For corporate: No

My suggestion: Use it but be sure how.

Where to find it:
